If you want to visit an astonishing place in Ireland, you just need to drive to the most Southwesterly point of the Island. There you will find the Mizen Head Signal Station at the end of the Mizen Peninsula. This point of the island is the first (or last) sight of Europe for many transatlantic ships. A lighthouse and the Mizen Head Signal Station was built (late 19th Century) to warn ships at sea of the treacherous rocks that lie close to the shore here.
West Cork and hidden nature gems
On my research about this place I have read on different websites that this signal station was also one of Marconi’s first telegraph stations. In order to access to this facilities, you will need to cross the Mizen Head Arched Bridge (built in early 20th Century) that connects the end of the peninsula to the mainland.
However, the most remarkable part of visiting this place is the landscape that surrounds the Peninsula. The view is compose of rocky cliffs that extends along the coast and it is breathtaking, The Mizen´s Cliffs are as stunning as Cliffs of Moher (the most famous cliffs of the Island).
Near to the Mizen´s Peninsula you can find a hidden and lonely beach (Barleycove beach) that in a sunny day you can go for a walk. The beach itself has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation by the European Union, due to the variety of wildlife and interesting habitats present in the sand dunes, according to the The National Parks and Wildlife Service from Ireland. The nearest village is Crookhaven where you can have a rest and some pints. If you need a map of west Cork check below link to google maps, so you can plan ahead your route.
