Mount Teide, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
It seems one of the easiest climbings as you have a cable car option just to enjoy the views, however you can do it by foot if you are an expert hiker. The top of the cable car station will allow to reach the peak of Mount Teide (3718 meters). Kepp in mind that you need a permit issued by the Park. You would need to walk by the trail 10 and show your permit (requested in advance) in order to reach the peak. Weather conditions are extreme in winter and in summer. This Volcano has night activaties such as sunset views and stars observation.
This is the official website for booking your permit for the “Parque nacional Teide” (Teide Naional Park) in case you wish to visit the peak.
Tenerife island has an international airport receiving flights from Cities all across Europe.
Stromboli, Italy
It can take 2 hours to hike to the peak and you need a guide (better to join a group). Booking in advance would be preferred. It seems that it si better to visit at sunset hours. Tours run from mid March until the end of October and travellers advise avoiding July and August months due to heat.
The climb can be a bit challenging, so better to be ready in advance. It is required water and Hike gear such as treking shoes and a flaslight.
if you wonder how to get to Stromboli island, there are ferries from Milazzo on Sicily, Naples or other Aeolian Island.
Mount Aso, Japan
This volcano erupted last time in 2016. Mount Aso’s caldera has a dimaeter of 25 Kilometers and int he center you can find Mount Nakdake which crate is accesible for visiting. However, before visiting check if the crater area is open as sometimes can be closed to visitors due to volcaninc gases or volcanicn activity. People with respiratory problems should not visit this area. Mount Aso has the largest active crater in the world
First, we need to arrive to JR Aso Station from Kumamoto city by Bus (2 hours). (Purchase the bus ticket one day in advance). People can take 40 min bus ride to The Nakadake Crater from JR Aso Station or walk about 30 minutes from Asosan Nishi Station. You have also the option of travelling by car and park nearby.
We would need to reach firstly Kumamoto Sation on the island of Kyushu. It seems that trains do not reach the Aso Mount area due to earthquakes. I found that travellers stay near to Aso Shrine, Aso city and Uchinomaki if you want to spend the night around.
Fagradalsfjall, Iceland
The most recent eruption of a volcano this year 2021 is happening on Iceland. Actually the volcano Fagradalsfjall is pretty close to the city of Reykjavik. Lava is flowing from the fissures since March 2021 and auhtorities still allow to visit the mountain, however more fissures are opening and it is better to check with authorities if it is possible to visit the place. Last time this volcano erupted was 10 thousand years ago during the Glacial Era.
The Volcano/fissures are in the Reykjanes Peninsula, best option to approach this place is by car. The site is near to the famous Blue Lagoon Geothermal spa and the Grindavík village. Although you need to walk 1 hour and a half to reach the fissure with lava.
It is a must to wear the correct gear for Iceland weather conditions: hiking shoes, warm and waterproof clothing.
Mount Merapi, Indonesia
The most active volcano in Indonesia’s is Mount Merapi in the island of Java. I have read that there are different ways to reach th top, I will list the ones that I found:
- Join a tour from Yogyakarta
- Hike without a tour, rent a motorbike or car from Yogyakarta
Selo village is the closest town to the Mountain. Headlamps are necessary for hiking furing night. It takes around 4 hours to walk to the peak, therefore you start to hike during night so at sunset you are at the top. Daylight hours seems pretty warm for the hike.
Mount Merapi is located 29 km to the north of the city of Yogyakarta and the peak elevation is 2,930 m.
